“You’re The Type of Person That” is my satire card and gift concept built around exaggerated, stupidly humorous insults.

Each design is presented in a stereotypical mimic of “those” overly positive & inspirational quotes (typically printed on cards, wall art, etc) that we see everywhere.

I wanted a contrast to those by making a parody of traditional feel-good design mixed with savage humor & ridiculous punch-line insults.

This idea all started from my best friend and I hurling insults at each other, trying to one-up each other constantly. We did this for years and years! One day, I decided to start writing down the best ones we said. Eventually, it turned into a game where we try and think of the best “Well….youre the type of person that *does this*” and write them down.

We planned on making it into a skit where we would be strangers that run into each other in a specific scenario and hurl insults and make fun of each other (spawning from the “Youre the type of guy” internet meme). Sadly, we haven’t made this into a YouTube channel or anything (maybe we will in the future?); which we even had plans to have our own Duo comedy channel that did stupid skits and such (kind of like Smosh).

But, while putting that plan on the back-burner, I had the thought of just making these into funny cards/gifts that people can roast their friends & families with!

The visual style & influences I wanted to draw from to get the main concept to these absurd insults was those stereotypical inspirational quotes done in mixed graphical design typography and typefaces. They’re everywhere, ranging from “Be Yourself” to “Don’t Ever Give Up On Your Dreams!”. I knew immediately I had to use that concept into developing how each insult would be presented.

I once had a book of reverse inspirational quotes, which featured beautiful backgrounds with anti-inspirational quotes like “It Doesn’t Matter What You Do In Life, Youre Still Going To Die”; as well as the memes that swarmed the internet with similar imagery and concepts. It’s an hilarious concept that I wanted to draw from and make into my own design!

The narrative and meaning behind this is to jokingly call-out people who do things that we all make fun of each other for.

This leans heavily on a mixture of the “Youre the Type of Guy That….something offensive towards a stereotype of what men do” and people as a whole.

Take this as a means for me to make professional looking graphic designs, while also being absurd in narrative. Nothing is meant to be taken seriously, and it’s purely just a means for people to be able to laugh at themselves and the weird stuff we do on a daily basis! *Well some more than others….heh*

The designs for this series are intentionally structured to mimic traditional inspirational quotes (I wonder how many times I’ve written that out), greeting cards, and gift prints.

I wanted each of the pieces to use clean typography, balanced layouts, and framed compositions that feel familiar and approachable at first glance. The contrast between polished, feel-good design and sarcastic or absurd statements is what drives the humor and identity of the project.

I use background imagery that’s carefully selected to reinforce each phrase (which are sourced from royalty-free sources like Pexels).

Overall, the process focuses on blending familiarity with immediate subversion; while using recognizable design language to deliver something unexpected, playful, savage, and intentionally ridiculous!

It’s called “You’re The Type of Person That” because it’s just legitimately what it is! I figured the more straight forward the better!
