What is Legends in Panel?

Concept

Legends in Panel is my homage to my favorite iconic characters throughout movies, video games, books, comics, pop culture, tv shows, etc!

I wanted to make illustrations that showcased my developing artistic style, while also making fan art of my favorite characters!

Origin

Legends in Panel started from me getting an iPad Pro with Procreate & being finally being able to actually draw on the screen using an Apple Pencil. I started all my digital artwork on an old MacBook Pro, on the software Pixelmator; while literally only using the damn mousepad as my means of illustrating. It sucked! A lot!

So once I had the ability to actually use my hand to draw again, I decided to use what I was learning and start making art. I started by wanting to redo my Pixel Horror artworks into a style that I liked better (the one you see from the Legends in Panel illustrations). While I was working on the artwork, I was running multiple ideas in my head. Then it clicked.

I now had the ability to draw my favorite characters in the way I actually wanted (I had done attempts on the old MacBook but it was absolute hell). From there, instead of redoing my old pixel art, I wanted to start an entirely different art project entirely. Thus spawning the idea to make fan art of my favorite characters throughout all my favorite medias!

Visual Style & Influences

The visual style that I’m insanely obsessed with is the concept behind Fantasy Portraits. This style of artwork is heavily used in “World of Warcraft”, “Hearthstone”, “Arcane” (and others alike), and I quickly fell deeply in love with the style.

When I was first introduced to this, I stumbled upon the glorious works of Dave Greco. Dave is one of the greatest artists of all time, and I easily consider him to be the reason I switched to digital art many years ago! I studied for years trying to get a grasp of his beautifully fluid art style, and finally landed on something I can relatively call my own!

Using that as a starting point, I added my love for thick line work, comic book effects, poster design, and horror anime all melted into one concept. This resulted into what you see with my main pieces!

Narratives & Meaning

Given that I’m such a huge nerd/geek, I needed to have a collection of my favorite characters made into eye-catching illustrations!

My plan is to illustrate every character I love, and bring their persona into an artwork I can call my own! Theres no way I wouldn’t be able to make fan art of my favorite characters.

My current list of characters I want to illustrate is daunting, and one day I might be able to complete them all!

Legends in Panel is purely my fun illustration project that I get to just draw my favorite characters and make them into dynamic posters! Legends are those iconic characters, and Panel is that overall styles and poses I want to put them into! Together, it gives me my favorite fan art drawings into something I can now see rather than constantly thinking of it!

Design Process

Deep down I’m a big project type of thinker. Which translates into ”making only illustrations” brings me nothing. It always has to be something more than a drawing.

My main love is designing. I absolutely adore making engaging and creative graphical designs that showcase whatever im aiming for! This shows why I spend so much time making unique logos/typography for each of the characters I do. I’m obsessed with making them all seem like youre looking at a movie poster and/or a dynamic book cover. This makes me spend so much time figuring out the concepts, compositions, and special poses.

At this point, because my brain is wired in this ADHD/over-thinking balance, I have to make each illustration into full graphical designs of its own! Thankfully, I love chilling in my car and pushing Procreate to its absolute limit!

Why The Legends in Panel Name?

Truthfully, the idea behind the name came super quickly.

The legends are the iconic characters from video games, books, movies, comics, etc that I love! Jill Valentine being my absolute favorite of all time (I know I wont shut up about it lol).

The panel is the style in which i illustrate them! Pretty simple!

Together it gives a beautiful sense of what im aiming for!

The Future!

Since this is my “Main” artwork illustrations, I take my sweet time on my designs.

I have a list of all the characters that I want to make, and once I get a full envision of how I want to illustrate / design them, I begin working on that character immediately. If I dont have an immediate idea of how I want them to look, i put it on the back burner (the main reason why i dont already have like 5 different Jill Valentine artworks).

This is going to be the project that I add the most amount of artwork to! I’m so excited to eventually show everything im working on! :)

Legends in Panel Portfolio Breakdown

Main Edition

Poison Ivy

Poison Ivy is the alter ego taken by Dr. Pamela Lillian Isley, an eco-terrorist and prominent enemy of Batman. First appearing in Batman #181, she is depicted as one of the world's most prominent eco-terrorists, motivated by an obsession with plants, misandry, botany, and extremist environmentalism with a desire to save the world from the evils of man through any means necessary.

Toxic Edition

Poison Ivy

Since Poison Ivy uses mutant plants, will-bending pheromones and toxins from plants and her own bloodstream for her criminal activities, I wanted to make an edition that portrays that toxic pheromone side of her!

Rose Edition

Poison Ivy

Ivy has also developed a special relationship with fellow villain Harley Quinn, with the two often being depicted as recurring partners-in-crime, friends and, sometimes, love-interests. This is what inspired me to make a love/rose edition to show her romantic side!

Velma Dinkley

Jinkies!

Velma Dinkley is the bespectacled resident genius of Mystery Inc., often being the one to decipher the clues and solve the crimes. She is sharp-witted and sometimes sarcastic, not lost on others. She also seems to love secrecy, and has a bit of slyness in her character, as she was the only gang member to actually perpetrate a hoax, albeit for a noble reason, as she was helping Omar Kara protect Cleopatras riches.

Velma Dinkley LGTBQ+ Edition

Jinkies!

Velma Dinkley is officially confirmed as a lesbian in the 2022 movie Trick-Or-Treat Scooby-Doo!, where she develops a crush on costume designer Coco Diablo. This canonical change follows decades of hints and confirmation from creators, including James Gunn and Tony Cervone, who intended her to be gay in previous iterations.

The Unfurgettable

Treasure

Treasure was a beautiful and amazing pup that my partner had. She was abused by her first owners and had a permanent spinal injury. When my partner managed to finally get her, Treasure had gone through surgeries and years of therapy. Treasure finally got to live a wonderful and happy life leading up to her passing at 14 1/2 years old. So I illustrated this design to give her a remberance of the super power pup she cared for! The lore would be that Treasure goes out at night to save other pups from abusive humans while my partner slept! Rest in peace the goodest of pups!

Sexy Pokes

Vile Daddy

Vile Daddy was derived as a commission from a friend that wanted to give someone a present, for their birthday, of their favorite Pokémon. This process was super fun to create and work on! I also made this design into a card with hilarious move sets and descriptions! After doing this, I’ve had plenty of commission requests to do more sexy Pokémon. Wasn’t something that I thought I would be illustrating, but super fun and hilarious to create!

Don’t See Your Fav Character(s)?

My current list of illustrations I’ve done for the Legends in Panel is far less than what I truthfully want it to be! Trust me, I have sooo many illustrations I’m currently working on! I’m a completionist, so if the design I created isn’t fully up to my standards then it wont see the light of day. Then, I will get distracted by another project I want to do! A great example of this, is that Jill Valentine is my favorite character of all time. I’ve already done many illustrations of her but not one im fully happy with. I will eventually have many different versions of her and I can’t wait to share them. But! That doesn’t mean I dont have your fav character on my list. If you want me to make one of your favorite character, please reach out to me! I defintely do commissions, and they get me to finalize and finish an illustration without moving to something else (given that it’s for someone other than myself)! A close friend of mine reached out and wanted a Harley Quinn. I was already working on one, but they wanted her in her roller derby persona. This actually made me rethink my design and now I’m changing her to that instead of what I originally had! So feel free to send me a message! Id love to hear from you! :)
